Onder leiding van pianiste en componiste Federica Colangelo is Acquaphonica sinds het begin in Amsterdam haar creatieve laboratorium geweest – een ensemble waar jazz, 20e-eeuwse Europese en Amerikaanse klassieke muziek en Zuid-Indiase Carnatische ritme elkaar op frisse, onverwachte manieren ontmoeten. Op drie geprezen albums (Private Enemy, Chiaroscuro, Endless Tail) heeft Colangelo een onderscheidende compositorische stem ontwikkeld, rijk aan ritmische intrige en textuurdiepte.
Voor Forward, haar vierde album dat in 2026 is uitgekomen, brengt ze een gloednieuw trio samen: bassist Igor Legari en drummer Giovanni Nardiello – beiden met diepe wortels in jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek – en nodigt ze als speciale gast de internationaal gevierde mridangam- en konnakol-meester BC Manjunath uit.
BC Manjunath is een wereldberoemd percussionist en Konnakol-meester, vereerd om zijn verbluffende ritmische innovaties en wereldwijde samenwerkingen. Zijn spel doordrenkt Colangelo's muziek met de puls van Zuid-Indiase talas, ingewikkelde polyritmes en de spontane energie van konnakol. Deze ontmoeting van geesten tilt het trio naar een crosscultureel klanklandschap, waar Europese jazz-klassieke compositie en Carnatische ritmische traditie in real time op elkaar afgaan.
Konnakol is de kunst van het vocaal uitvoeren van percussielettergrepen in de Zuid-Indiase Carnatische muziek. Het is onderdeel van solkattu, dat verwijst naar een combinatie van konnakol-lettergrepen die worden uitgesproken terwijl tegelijkertijd de tala (meter) met de hand wordt geteld. Binnen de Westerse muziek en jazz was het vooral John McLaughlin die konnakol toepaste binnen het Mahavishnu Orchestra en, nog prominenter, in Shakti.
Pianiste en componiste Federica Colangelo, nu weer woonachtig in Italië, initieerde het Acquaphonica-project in Amsterdam, met als eerste idee een fantasierijk laboratorium voor haar muziek. Haar werk wordt gekenmerkt door voortdurende verkenning, waarbij ze put uit jazz, 20e-eeuwse Europese en Amerikaanse klassieke muziek (waaronder Charles Ives, Philip Glass, John Cage en Igor Stravinsky), en de ingewikkelde ritmische tradities van de Zuid-Indiase Carnatische muziek. Deze unieke mix van invloeden vormt de basis van haar kenmerkende, persoonlijke compositiestijl, waarbij ritmische figuren de basis vormen voor evocatief en verhalend spel.

Acquaphonica is the project founded by Italian pianist and composer Federica Colangelo in Amsterdam, conceived from the beginning as a space for research and experimentation—a creative laboratory where musical composition interacts with improvisation, interplay, and the rhythmic complexity of contemporary jazz.
From its debut, the group has shown a distinctive poetic identity and a strong sense of musical cohesion, releasing three albums: Private Enemy in 2012, Chiaroscuro in 2016, and Endless Tail in 2019. The first album, recorded in the Netherlands, was enthusiastically received by international critics: All About Jazz praised its balance of lyricism and dynamism, describing the compositions as evocative of both the chamber-like narratives of Oregon and a deeply Mediterranean sensibility. Jazz’halo also highlighted the group’s poetic nature, underlining the refinement of their interplay and the expressive density of their sound, while Italian media outlets such as Jazzit Magazine, Musica Jazz, All About Jazz Italia, and Radio Città Aperta have followed the project’s evolution through interviews and in-depth features.
Today, Acquaphonica consists of Federica Colangelo on piano and as the leading composer, Igor Legari on double bass, and Giovanni Nardiello on drums, with the special participation of B.C. Manjunath, a renowned Indian Carnatic percussionist, in their new project Forward—the fourth album currently in preparation and inspired by their recent tour in India. Manjunath’s contribution, as one of the most celebrated performers of South Indian rhythmic tradition, represents one of the most exciting new directions for the trio, which has long explored the integration of European jazz, contemporary composition, and Carnatic rhythmic models.
Over the years, Acquaphonica has performed at numerous festivals and clubs across Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and Bulgaria, including Utrecht Jazz Festival, Maastricht Jazz Festival, B-flat in Berlin, Jazz Forum Stara Zagora, Burgas Jazz Festival, Varna Summer International Jazz Festival, Apollonia Art Festival, Studio 1 of the Bulgarian National Radio, Teatro Grande in Brescia, Casa del Jazz, Iseo Jazz, Piano Piano per Sulmona, Lucca Jazz Donna, and many others.
The group’s music continues to evolve through deep and rigorous research, where composition and improvisation coexist in a constantly shifting balance—open to dialogue with different musical traditions and the present moment.
